Sand Casting

Sand casting is the most used expandable mold metal casting process because of the easy process and its ability of cast all the alloy and even high melting metal. All size parts can be cast by using the sand casting.

Steps involves is sand casting

Step 1

Pattern is made of wood or metal depending upon the requirement. Pattern shape is exactly like the shape of the part to be cast. There are four types of pattern you can make
(a) solid pattern
(b) split pattern
(c) match-plate pattern
(d) cope and drag pattern

Step 2

Pattern is placed in a special design container and container is than filled with sand. After the sand settles pattern is removed. Cavity remaining is called mold. All parts are attached to make a complete mold. There are three types of sand mold available
1. Green sand
2. Dry sand mold
3. Skin dry mold

Sand used for making the mold should have following properties
1. Strength
2. Permeability
3. Thermal stability
4. Collapsibility
5. Reusability

Step 3

After the mold is complete hot molten metal is poured into the mold and allow to solidify

Step 4

After the metal solidify mold is broken to remove the part

Step 5

Clean the part from sand. Do some machining and heat treatment if required
